Brooks Elementary School’s new Principal is Kevin Fugate.
“I am really excited to begin a journey with Brooks Elementary and Bullitt County,” he said. “I am happy that the hiring team at Brooks found the qualities they were looking for in me.”
Fugate’s short term goals at Brooks Elementary are to build relationships with his school community and build a unifying culture.
Long term goals include seeing Brooks excel both culturally and academically.
“I think everyone wants to see Brooks excel in those areas,” he said.
Fugate earned a Bachelor’s degree in primary education from Morehead State University. He achieved a Master’s and Rank 1 in Reading and Writing Specialist/Principalship from Union College.
His work experience has all been at the elementary level in Perry County Public Schools beginning with Buckhorn Elementary as a fourth and fifth grade reading/social studies/math teacher from January 2001 - June 2004. From there, he spent nine years at Big Creek Elementary teaching third grade self-contained and fourth grade math.
From 2013-2015, he taught fourth and fifth grade math and Language Arts at A.B. Combs Elementary before leaving the classroom to become assistant principal at R.W. Combs Elementary (July 2015-November 2016).
Fugate has been interim principal at Robinson Elementary since November 2016. He feels the 18 years he has invested in education has adequately prepared him for Brooks.
“I feel confident that I can help Brooks reach its full potential,” he said.
Fugate believes the most challenging issue facing schools today is funding.
“I feel that the political climate has left education with fewer resources, even fewer than we already had,” he said. “Luckily, it makes us creative and resourceful in ways that we haven’t had to be before. After seeing the unification of so many educators across the state, I believe we’ll see this change positively for our schools.”
He fills time away from school with various hobbies.
“My dogs go everywhere with me (except work). I enjoy playing outside with them and the occasional trip to the pet store to buy toys and treats. I also like traveling, playing video games, hiking, going to the gym, reading comics, and spending time with friends and family,” he said.
